Rehabilitation worker

Location Medellín, Colombia

“Casa de Refugio” (House of Refuge) is a local church with 150 members. It has a foundation called “Ciudad Refugio” (Refuge city), with which it carries out joint activities. The foundation engages in evangelism and helps people move away from living on the streets due to drug addiction. It runs a one-year residential rehabilitation programme for men. They also run a night shelter for men in extremely vulnerable circumstances. They currently provide this service to 60 men. Weekly visits are made to the area known as “El Bronx”, where thousands of people addicted to drugs and who are living on the streets can be found. They are provided with a small snack and basic medical care, the good news of Christ is shared with them and they are invited to join the rehabilitation programme.

The process is comprehensive, primarily based on evangelism, and includes resocialisation activities. They run a café and bakery called “Café Refugio” (Refuge Café) where some of the men in the programme work; they also have a recycling scheme, a carpentry workshop, and a vegetable stall. The Foundation also functions as a missionary base.
